| Being
an organization designed to reach out to the African population
on our campus doesn't mean we end there. ASA is also involved
in campus wide service programs such as Into the Streets and
offers other services to the members of ASA. |

Community
Into the Streets:
Into The Streets is a student service tradition. Hundreds
of UMBC students go into the community and volunteer
their time in a variety of places ranging from soup
kitchens to tree planting. Team leader and issue coordinators
help develop service sites and work in the surrounding
counties. This year, ASA's representation was outstanding.
Thirty people from ASA signed-up to participate for
this cause.
Tutorial Sessions:
We've all had a class or two that have given us a difficult
time sometime during the semester and we all know how
difficult getting back on track without help can be! To
help students maintain strong academic standing, ASA has
formed various study and tutorial sessions. First year
students having difficulty with classes can post an e-mail
on ASA's mailing list (asa@lists.umbc.edu) to get assistance
from someone. Another valuable resource is the test/quiz
bank, setup to aid in the preparation of exams or quizzes.
For your books and class material needs you post an e-mail
message on the list and you'll be sure to receive feedback
from people with the books/materials you need.
Language Workshops:
One of the goals of ASA is to strengthen ties between
African students and other students within the UMBC
community by promoting cultural awareness. Africa
is a continent of rich and diverse culture and ASA
wants to showcase some of the splendor of Africa through
our upcoming African Language workshop. The workshop
will teach students common phrases, greetings, popular
sayings, and the basic language structures of some
major African languages. Languages discussed will
include Amharic, Asante, Bemba, Fulani, Hausa, Igbo,
Mende, Nyanja, Tigrinia, Twi, Uhrobo, and Wolof.
